Download your raw data file

Ancestry.com (recommended option)

DNA Data is the information generated from an AncestryDNA® test. This data is used to estimate your ethnicity estimate, match you with genetic relatives, and predict your traits. This uninterpreted data is also called “raw data.”

DNA Data can be downloaded in a .txt (text file) format. DNA Data from other websites cannot be uploaded to Ancestry®.

Go to DNA Settings

  1. From your DNA Settings, select the test you'd like to download.
  2. Scroll down to the Download or Delete section and select Download DNA data.
  3. Select the box to confirm that you understand, and click Continue.
  4.  Verify your account by choosing 1 of 2 methods:
    • Click Enter current password. Enter your password into the field and click Continue.
    • Click Send code via email > Send code. Retrieve the code from your email inbox and enter it into the Enter Code field. Click Continue.

  1. Check your email inbox for an email to download your DNA data. The email can take up to 24 hours to arrive.
  2. In the email, select Download DNA Data. The downloaded file will not be in or attached to the email.
If you made multiple download requests, only the most recent email from Ancestry (associated with your most recent download request) will have a valid link. A download link can only be used once. It will expire after a week. If your link has expired, start over at step 1.
  3. Click Download DNA Data.
  4. The file will be downloaded to your computer. The file name will be dna-data-(date).zip. If you can’t find it, check your Downloads folder or search for the file name (if you have a PC) by clicking the Windows key User-added image on your keyboard and entering the file name in the search field that appears. If you have an Apple computer, select the Spotlight icon User-added image in the top-right corner of your screen and enter the file name in the search field. To open the file, double-click it.

23& Me (filed for bankruptcy)

You can access your raw genetic data within your 23andMe account one of three ways:

  • Navigate directly to you.23andme.com/tools/data/
  • Click on your profile name on the top right-hand corner of your homepage, and select Browse Raw Data from the dropdown menu.
  • Visit your Account Settings and click on “View” under 23andMe Data. You will see a blue “Download Raw Data” button which will redirect you to the download raw data page.

Downloading Your Raw Data

To download your raw data, click on the Download tab from within the top navigation bar within the Browse Raw Data feature and scroll down until you see the "Submit request" button. You will receive an email to the email address associated with your 23andMe account when your raw data download file is ready. Typically files are ready within 1 hour.

Upload your raw data file

Genetic Genie

We recommend to start with GeneticGenie and upload your raw data file to get Methylation/ Detox Panels and GenVue Variant Discovery.  This site is free and quite user friendly.

Genetic Lifehacks

GeneticLifehacks is a great source of information and offers genetic reports  (some require a subscription).

StrateGene

StrateGene offers a very comprehensive report, however there is a $95 charge. They only use raw data files from Ancestry and SelfDecode.

NutraHacker

NutraHacker offers free methylation and detox reports. Other reports available based on a fee. Does not seem as comprehensive or user friendly as some other sites.
